Racing at Clayton Bay

Clayton Bay Boat Club Inc. (CBBC) is located on Island View Drive, to the east of the Clayton Riverside Holiday Park, at Clayton Bay.

The club resides in Red Top Bay, an inlet from the Goolwa Channel in the Lower Murray Lakes system.

The sailing waters extend from the Goolwa Barrage, in the west, to Stony Point, just north east of Rat Island.

Local topography can result in ‘bullets’ of wind sweeping down from hills and cliffs, and fluky wind directions.

In the spring and summer, we can receive strong breezes. For safety reasons, the CBBC generally limits racing to days with less than 22 knots of wind, because a general reading of this magnitude can often be accompanied by gusts of 5 or 10 knots more.

The current in the river is usually benign, but when flooding has occurred upstream it can increase to 2 -4 knots in a downstream direction.

The Race Committee utilises a north-west to south-east channel, the Finniss River, Rat, Goat, Goose Islands and the various creeks, bays and inlets when placing race courses.

The Long Race Series can involve more than 20 NM of sailing while the Red Top Sprint Series involves sailing around a buoyed course, largely in Red Top Bay.

The Rat Race Regatta is an annual race, held over a weekend in March, which includes a course through nearby Dunn’s Lagoon and a circumnavigation of Rat Island. The regatta attracts a significant number of participants in a wide range of vessel classes.

Racing here can be challenging, but it’s always interesting and fun. We have a well-stocked bar in the clubroom and, on the first Sunday of each month, we offer a barbecue lunch -BYO salad to share.
